What is a Laptop Stand ?

If you're like me, and use your laptop for inordinately long lengths of time, you would have found that the laptop sometimes gets too hot to handle. Whenever this happens, I am torn between the need to continue with pressing work and putting the laptop aside till it cools down. I have often found that when the laptop gets unbearably hot, the performance also suffers. At times, things have gotten so bad that a simple task like copying a paragraph or pasting another takes more than a couple of minutes!

I accidentally discovered the panacea to all my laptop travails when I happened to come across a laptop stand in a computer. While I never before had seen anything like a laptop stand, it actually wasn’t that difficult to spot. For one thing, there was a laptop on it, reclining comfortably. And for another, there was a large sign in front of it that declared in no uncertain terms that it was, after all, a laptop stand!

Seeking to learn more, I took a closer look at the laptop stand. It was much more than an ergonomically designed device made for the convenience of the laptop itself. In fact, it seemed to be a device that would enable me to keep my computer in a cool environment to enable it to operate more efficiently. A dead giveaway than enabled me to come to this conclusion was the presence of two large and gleaming fans built into the frame of the laptop stand.

If I were to describe the laptop stand more comprehensively, I would say that it was a piece of plastic that raised the laptop to give it more room to have air circulating under it, thereby keeping it cool. This of course is what a simple laptop stand would look like. A more comprehensive laptop stand however would involve fans, cooling liquids, and in one memorable case, a water cooling system to keep the laptop cool. Now while not everybody would be frivolous enough to buy such ‘accessories’ for their laptops, those like me, who have been having problems, would surely opt for one. If only to make their computers, especially laptops perform better.

At that show the other day, I managed to buy myself a basic laptop stand. It has provided me with a temporary solution. But I am still in the market for a more permanent solution. I too am on the look out for one of those air cooled or water cooled laptop stands that will make my humble laptop look like a space age machine!
